One Small Thing, #15

Well, I’m not sure that the first scrumble is finished, but it feels like time to start the second one. I will probably go back to the first, eventually, for a few more small touches. Even though there are lots of different stitches in it, it is still quite small. When I have a better idea what the final piece is going to be, I will decide.

Today’s small thing is a crocheted spiral. This one is a bit more complicated than a basic spiral because it is made from three different yarns and three different stitches. I have used     double crochets, half doubles, and 8-wrap bullions.

Spirals are tricky! One must basically build a road, walk on it right to the edge of the cliff, then build more road. If you look closely at the photo, above, you can see that I have walked the pink double crochets nearly to the edge of the Bullion stitch road. Next I will build more Bullion stitch road until I get close to the end of the gold half double crochets. Does that make sense?

There’s also a bit of a trick getting started. Would you like to know it? I’ll be happy to explain to all who ask!!

    Hi Gretchen,

    I love the Blogs! It’s my first experience with such a thing. Enjoyed following the progress of the Freeform and thought I would try to duplicate one. But, unfortunately, sometimes there is just not enough time in the day! But, I am going to make time.

    I would like to know the secret to the beginning of the spiral. Thanks so much for the Blog.

    Suzanne

      Hi Suzanne, It’s lovely to see you, here, in cyberspace! I will reveal the secret of the spiral in a new post, over the next few days. Thank you for asking!I want to do it right, with photos and all, so it will take more than a quick response. But, you will find it easy and infinitely customizable. I hope you’re having fun with your Freeform! Send me photos sometime!

      Neelu;
      Hi Neelu, Thank you for your question. There is a different post that covers basic crocheted spirals in detail. You can find it at this link https://florilegium.com/crocheted-spiral/
      The post you were reading is a more complicated version using 3 colors instead of 2. You might like to try that one after mastering the basic version.

      I hope this helps!!
      Have fun, Gretchen.
